Best approximation and variational inequality problems involving a simulation function

2016

We prove the existence of a g-best proximity point for a pair of mappings, by using suitable hypotheses on a metric space. Moreover, we establish some convergence results for a variational inequality problem, by using the variational characterization of metric projections in a real Hilbert space. Our results are applicable to classical problems of optimization theory.

Thin obstacle problem : Estimates of the distance to the exact solution

2018

We consider elliptic variational inequalities generated by obstacle type problems with thin obstacles. For this class of problems, we deduce estimates of the distance (measured in terms of the natural energy norm) between the exact solution and any function that satisfies the boundary condition and is admissible with respect to the obstacle condition (i.e., they are valid for any approximation regardless of the method by which it was found). Computation of the estimates does not require knowledge of the exact solution and uses only the problem data and an approximation. The estimates provide guaranteed upper bounds of the error (error majorants) and vanish if and only if the approximation c…

Numerical Algorithms Based on Characteristic Domain Decomposition for Obstacle Problems

1997

A new numerical solution algorithm for obstacle problems is proposed, where the characteristic domain decomposition into active and inactive subdomains separated by the free boundary is approximated by a Schwarz method. Such an approach gives an opportunity to apply fast linear system solvers to genuinely non-linear obstacle problems. Other solution algorithms, like projected relaxation methods and active set strategies, are compared to the new solution algorithm. Numerical experiments related to the elastoplastic torsion problem are included showing the efficiency of the new approach.

Finite element approximation of parabolic hemivariational inequalities

1998

In this paper we introduce a finite element approximation for a parabolic hemivariational initial boundary value problem. We prove that the approximate problem is solvable and its solutions converge on subsequences to the solutions of the continuous problem

Variational differential inclusions without ellipticity condition

2020

The paper sets forth a new type of variational problem without any ellipticity or monotonicity condition. A prototype is a differential inclusion whose driving operator is the competing weighted $(p,q)$-Laplacian $-\Delta_p u+\mu\Delta_q u$ with $\mu\in \mathbb{R}$. Local and nonlocal boundary value problems fitting into this nonstandard setting are examined.

Non-cooperative power allocation game with imperfect sensing information for cognitive radio

2012

In this paper, we consider a sensing-based spectrum sharing scenario and present an efficient decentralized algorithm to maximize the total throughput of the cognitive radio users by optimizing jointly both the detection operation and the power allocation, taking into account the influence of the sensing accuracy. This optimization problem can be formulated as a distributed non-cooperative power allocation game, which can be solved by using an alternating direction optimization method. The transmit power budget of the cognitive radio users and the constraint related to the rate-loss of the primary user due to the interference are considered in the scheme. Finally, we use variational inequal…

Optimal shape design and unilateral boundary value problems: Part II

2007

In the first part we give a general existence theorem and a regularization method for an optimal control problem where the control is a domain in R″ and where the system is governed by a state relation which includes differential equations as well as inequalities. In the second part applications for optimal shape design problems governed by the Dirichlet-Signorini boundary value problem are presented. Several numerical examples are included.

On Strong Convergence of Halpern’s Method for Quasi-Nonexpansive Mappings in Hilbert Spaces

2016

In this paper, we introduce a Halpern’s type method to approximate common fixed points of a nonexpansive mapping T and a strongly quasi-nonexpansive mappings S, defined in a Hilbert space, such that I − S is demiclosed at 0. The result shows as the same algorithm converges to different points, depending on the assumptions of the coefficients. Moreover, a numerical example of our iterative scheme is given.

Hoffman's Error Bound, Local Controllability, and Sensitivity Analysis

2000

Our aim is to present sufficient conditions ensuring Hoffman's error bound for lower semicontinuous nonconvex inequality systems and to analyze its impact on the local controllability, implicit function theorem for (non-Lipschitz) multivalued mappings, generalized equations (variational inequalities), and sensitivity analysis and on other problems like Lipschitzian properties of polyhedral multivalued mappings as well as weak sharp minima or linear conditioning. We show how the information about our sufficient conditions can be used to provide a computable constant such that Hoffman's error bound holds. We also show that this error bound is nothing but the classical Farkas lemma for linear …
